Nene Awards Committee Meeting Minutes

Program:

May 9^th

USS Missouri

Maile is coordinating with the events coordinator, Yvonne Mia of the USS Missouri Memorial

The ceremony will be kept short; attendees may tour the ship before or after the ceremony.

There will be no “lunch with the author” (since Harry Mazer is not attending); however we could offer optional box lunches (preordered).

Since Harry Mazer will not be attending, Maile requested a speaker from the ship.

 

The suggested reading list for next year will be distributed at the May 9^th ceremony.

 

Treasurer:

Balance as of August 31^st statement: $3,292.54.

 

Last year received:  (2006 when Kate DiCamillo visited)

$1,000.00 from Barnes and Noble:

$2,000.00 from Friends of the Library of Hawaii

Did not request any funds from HASL or HLA / Will request this year.

 

 

Harry Mazer is not coming so funds do not have to be allocated for his visit;

Suggestion was made to pay the airfare for neighbor island student [contest] winners to attend the ceremony.

 

We need more than one person on the signature card for the checking account.  The bank also requires a list of officers.  Maile and Loretta will go to be added to the signature card.

 

Web Master:

Attempting to obtain winning essays and pictures from last year’s program to put on website.

Looking for suggestions for links, etc. for website.

Sherry will update last year’s brochure and it will go up on the website.

 

Suggested Reading Titles:

Committee decided on March 14 as the common Nene due date (Nene Votes, Contest Entries, Title Nominations).

It was suggested that there be less emphasis on/encouragement for write-in votes since there were so many write-in votes last year (when the ballots asked for write in votes). 

Recommendation: emphasize request for nominations for next year’s list instead.

 

Invitations:

HSPLS (Hawaii State Public Library System) is responsible for invitations this year.

Information needed:

--How many can be accommodated

--Lunch details (pre-ordered box lunches; where may groups eat)

--Tour details (time/how many per group)

--How many chaperones are necessary.

Monthy Nene reminders will be posted to SLS listserv.

Supplies:

Our supply of Nene ribbons is getting low.  Helen found our Nene Ribbon supplier (Jeff from Iwilei Rd) who is willing to give us a discount that will keep the ribbons at the same cost as last time.  It was decided to order 3000 more ribbons for $600.00

Note from Maile:  Loretta asked about the Perma-Bound copies of Boy at War to be given to libraries that participated in the Nene award voting.  Sherman Tom of Perma-Bound said he would distribute the copies to the schools.  Public libraries received theirs from Maile  HSL.
