Maile (MD) announced that Yvonne Mia, events coordinator for the Battleship Missouri, is working to set up a meeting with HSTA. HSTA may act as a sponsor/under-writer to help with the costs of the Nene Ceremony (admission fees, etc). We still have money from past funding requests but are hoping for sponsorship.
The Nene Program Committee will schedule a walk-through tour of the venue soon.
Patti has updated the Nene website with a new layout and more links. A link to the Battleship Missouri's website can now be found at our Nene site. The Nene site can be found at http://nene.k12.hi.us/
Two conferences are coming up, Children's Literature Hawaii's conference (CLH) takes place June 26-28, and the DOE's E-School conference takes place on March 11-12, 2008. Janet Y discussed the idea of forming a panel to speak at the CLH conference in a session focusing on the topic "How to Share the Nene Award" from the perspective of a public librarian, a public school librarian, and a private school librarian. Perhaps Nene Committee members can plan to speak at one of these local conferences in the future.
MD asked if anyone had worked with Gail Buttons of the DOE's Tele-School who visited a previous Nene Meeting. Denise thought that Michelle C of Halekula had worked with Gail and has considered speaking at e-School on this topic.
The Nene Committee spent $600 on stickers recently.
HASL has set aside $500 for our committee.
We have asked HLA for $1,000 for our committee.
[update 2/8/08: HLA has given our committee a check for $1,000 ]
Ceremony/Program Ideas and Questions
This year we will have a shorter ceremony followed by a "highlight tour" of the Battleship Missouri.
For more information about this tour, please visit the USS Missouri website, http://www.ussmissouri.com/default.aspx .
Questions raised by committee members
Q: Are shuttles available or necessary?
A: We will know more after meeting with the Missouri's event's coordinator. A meeting should take place within the next month.
Q: What are the chaperone guidelines?
A: Grade 2-4, 5 students:1 chaperone. Grade 5-8, 8 students:1 chaperone.
We can send Harry Mazer his Nene Award plaque. Maybe he will send us a photo of himself with the plaque (like Paolini) or record a video acceptance speech (like Judy Blume).
Denise S says that the contest committee has created checklists for students participating in the Nene Contest. These checklists are geared towards children and use child-friendly language. These checklists will be emailed to Patti to add to the Nene website. The contest rubrics which are geared towards adults will be moved to the "Librarians and Teachers" section of the website.
Sherry R shared news about the re-authorization of No Child Left Behind coming up this month (Feb '08) and Senate Bill S1699. Please visit the following link to the ALA site to learn more about supporting our school librarians. http://www.capwiz.com/ala/issues/alert/?alertid=10223941

Virginia K/ Maryknoll says Ms. Dorie of Maryknoll will again perform the Hawaiian opening chant.
The Ceremony will begin at 10 am and last approximately 1 hour.
Possible program:
Chant
Chorus
Special Speaker
Recognize contest winners
Announcement of New Nene Award winner
tour (45 mins)
optional lunch
Q: (Patti M) Is it possible to have tours available both before and after the ceremony to ease the crowd of students? Could nearby schools tour before the ceremony and faraway schools tour after the ceremony?
Q: Is there a limit to the attendance?
A: There was no limit set by the Missouri. The cost estimates were based on a count of 300 attendees.
Q: Lunch facilities?
A: The Nene Committee does not plan to provide lunches for any students this year because there is no visiting author. Box Lunches are available for purchase by individual students if ordered in advance. Box Lunch purchases are an option, not mandatory. Lunches can be eaten on the Mess Deck only. The Missouri will not store lunch bags for schools.
Q What is the capacity of the Mess Deck?
Q: How far in advance do schools need to order boxed lunches?
Q: Can we start tours before 9:30am? We have to remember that some schools relying on buses cannot get there until close to 10am.
Q: Since we have no author to speak, who should our featured speaker be?
-Ernest Thompson, WWII vet, served at both Pearl Harbor and on the USS Missouri, age 90, does not live in Hawaii.
-Lee Webber, Board member for the Missouri, President of the Advertiser, Lives in Hawaii, retired military.
+ As president of the Advertiser, we may get more media coverage.
-Ask Michael W. Perry if he will announce Nene winner again.
Q: Who should we invite? The usual politicians and legislators?
There is a new picture book out, My Grandfather's Battleship Missouri Tour by Jeff Langcaon.
Janet Y announced that Liliha Library will be closed for 2-3 months starting on Feb. 9th.
The contest committee discussed changing the contest due date to an earlier date because Hawaii Kai Library will be closed on Friday March 14th. The committee decided to keep the due date March 14th.
New rule for the Essay contest: All essays must be emailed to the Nene Contest committee at NeneAwardEssayContest at gmail.com
As a reminder, the Nene Committee gmail account can be accessed by all committee members.

We need to prepare a letter and registration form so that schools can learn about the upcoming ceremony and register to attend.
We need to ask Hillary about RSVP responses for the ceremony.
We need to create a list of participating schools to invite.
The Ceremony is for participants who submitted votes for the Nene Award.
Patti will update the website to reflect any changes discussed at this meeting.
Book suggestions can be submitted to the Vicky D of the Nene Suggestions committee until March 14th.
Please include title and author.
The next meeting will take place at Pauoa Elementary School Library.
For more information about the next meeting, please see the emailed version of the meeting minutes.
