3.  Discussion—Rick Riordan/date for Nene

 

1st Choice: 

 

Offer him choices--In conjunction with Book and Music Festival? 

The day before?

But the Book and Music Festival isn’t on a school day….

 

Decision:  Offer him the week of May 11^th right before the Books & Musical Festival

*Talk to Roger Jellineck—would he consider helping us secure Rick Riordan?

Virginia will contact Roger.

 

If he can’t come in the spring, we would still like to pursue a visit in the Fall. 

 

Would HSPLS help us bring him in for fall library program?  Most likely, yes.

 

Farrington as the potential location?   Yes

 

2^nd Choice:  (If we don’t have the author in May) Paliku Theatre @ Windward Community College, Planetarium

 

4.  Contest submissions and voting due March 11, 2009

 

 

5.  Other announcements:

 

 

For Standards Board & Licensure, teachers who give service to committees can use it for re-licensure—documentation will be needed.  Sherry and Virginia will create documentation for DOE teachers to use as evidence—a certificate that all librarians could use in their professional portfolio.

 

Note:  Add the above to Chair/Co-chair checklist of assignments.

 

 

Request:  Could a letter be sent to Nene Committee participant’s principals/branch head or State Librarian describing participation on the committee?  Yes.

 

 

Invite previous Nene chair, Linda U. to participate in Nene

 

 

Need to talk to Lynette about DOE new librarian’s meeting.  We had planned to inform new librarians of Nene events and the website

 

 

6.  Planning for Sept. 20 conference

 

Joint conference Hawaii Council of Teachers of English and Hawaii Association of School Librarians

 

 

Title of presentation:  “How to Nene:  Incorporating the Nene Book Program into your Curriculum”

 

Description of presentation:  The Nene is the State award for literature given each year to the “best book.” Voting is done by students in grades 4, 5, & 6.

 

 

            Michelle will talk about how she does lunch time discussions with students

 

           

 

Teacher—Jeff Chang (Virginia will ask him to speak)

 

 

            Static display of books on current Nene list; lists to take with them, computers

 

with last year’s winning electronic entries.

 

 

Virginia will check on last year’s winning electronic entry

 

 

Dori will check with Travis K. about speaking

 

 

Vicky will bring winning posters to meeting Sept. 8

 

Michelle will attach PDF for conference
